The Cream of the Crop: The Allison's Farm Story
There would be no Georgetown Farmers’ Market without Allison’s Farm - truly. The Allisons, along with other volunteers and vendors, helped create the market 32 years ago, long before it became what it is today. I had the chance to sit down with Bob Allison and his daughter Christine to reflect on just how far things have come.
What began as a small gathering of local vendors, has grown into a bustling market with nearly 100 vendors each week. Through all that growth, Allison’s Farm has remained at the heart of it; and their corn has become a true summertime tradition. Christine shared that each year has only gotten busier, with Bob noting that they now go through about 400 dozen cobs of corn in a single morning.
For so many in Georgetown, Allison’s corn carries a story. For me, it’s memories of summer mornings with my grandfather, choosing the best cobs together, husking a few just enough to make life easier at home. That simple ritual has stayed with me, along with the scent of fresh corn that will always mean summer. What would our market be without the Allisons!
When I asked Bob why corn, he shared that it began when he was in high school, and over the years it became the centerpiece of their farm’s summer harvest. Christine added that corn on the cob feels special because it belongs to summer; it’s a food you wait all year for, one that instantly reminds you of family gatherings and warm BBQ evenings.
Even now, the Allison family continues to pour their hearts into the farm. Bob joked about trying to retire more than a decade ago, only to end up buying another farm instead. Christine reminded me that what makes Allison’s truly special is the family behind it- now in its fifth and sixth generations, all lending a hand in one way or another.
As summer winds down, make sure to stop by the market and take home some of Allison’s famous corn. It isn’t just food- it’s a piece of Georgetown’s history, and a taste of summer you’ll always remember. 🌽
